Ruinsara Tal Trek - Overview

Har ki dun - Runsara Tal Trek is one of the magnificent and fascinating treks in India at an altitude of 11700 feet. Har ki dun Runsara tal trek falls in the Garhwal Himalayas range of Uttarakhand and starts from the village Sankari. River tons is a perpetual Indian Himalayan river, gives a panoramic and delightful view of this valley, the main source of this river falls in Ruinsara Snout. This route comes across the place Dhum Dhar Kandi ridge that moves further to Kalanag and Bandarpoonch.

You can do Har ki dun and Ruinsara Tal trek. separately But if you do the Ruinsara Lake trek along with Harki dun, then it will be a better experience. Where Har ki dun trek is abutted by the pleasant alpine lakes, waterfalls, grasslands, forest, and meadows. On the other side, Rupinsara Tal suffused with wild purple orchids. This is one of the most ancient Himalayan trails in Uttrakhand. This trek comes under a moderate level valley trek and not difficult to vanquish if compare to other summer treks.

At once reaching the top of Har ki dun Ruinsara Tal, the view goes splendid to see other peaks as well, like Swargarohini, the low lying Hata peak, Kalang peak, and Bandarpunch (all paramount peak of Garhwal Himalayas).

This area belongs to the tremendous ancient culture of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. While going through the Osla village, trekkers can also see the ancient temple of Duryodhana (according to Hindu Mythology). Some villages conserve around 3000 years old heritage and traditions. A complex sculpted wooden architecture catches every trekker’s eyes at one place for a moment. According to old beliefs, the Pandavas had gone through the valley Har ki dun to Swargarohini peak. Ruinsara lake also symbolizes as the center of worship by the Osla villagers.

Therefore, you will also experience the rich culture, heritage, and local foods of the hamlets on their visit to Har ki dun Ruinsara Tal trek. If you decide to complete the Har ki dun trek along with Ruinsara, then it will be a great experience for a lifetime.

Early in the morning we will leave from Dehradun to Sankari. You will be picked up from ISBT Dehradun. On the way to Sankari we will cross the Queen of hills - Mussoorie, Naugaon, Purola, Mori & the final check-point at Netwar before reaching Sankri. At night we will rest at The Crazy Mountaineers homestay or guest house.

At Purola, you should make all your important phone calls as the signal becomes weak & only BSNL connection is available with limited connection. In case you need any last minute shopping, equipment, trek essentials & garments are available at the Sankri local market.

After breakfast we will leave from Sankri for Taluka, the ride is a bit rough and we will start walking as soon as we reach Taluka. We will be walking beside the gushing Supin river under the shade of beautiful pine and walnut trees. The scenic beauty of the place is mesmerizing.

As we keep walking, we will cross some river streams that merge into the Supin river. You can see the village Gangad to your left, after walking for one more hour we will reach the beautiful village of Osla. Across the river from Osla there is a small village called seema. We will spend the night over here in camps for today.

The trek gets a little difficult as we leave Osla as the path is a bit steep, the trail passes through beautiful orchids of fleece & sunflowers. The trail climbers higher and form the top you will be able to see the meeting of Supin and the river form the Ruinsara valley.

As we keep walking higher up the trail on the left side of the river, we reach Har Ki Dun Valley, the view from there is very panoramic & we will be camping here tonight at the junction of two valleys that originate from Jaundhar & Hata glacier.

Today, we relax at Har Ki Dun Village. You can explore the vast meadows along the Supin river and the forests of the Himalayan Birch & get a closer view of the Swargarohini Peak & Jaundhar Glacier.

You can also explore the Hata Valley, from there you can get a good view of the Hata peak & Glacier. Marinda Tal, which is located at a distance of 2Km from Har Ki Dun also waits for you to be explored. It is a small lake which is formed because of a rock that blocks the river flowing down from the Borasu pass.

We will walk about a kilometer back on the trail coming from Osla to Har Ki Dun. After that we take a left down to a path that will lead us to a small bridge and cross over to the other side. This path passes through a dense forest for about 2 Km. From there we will walk some more to reach the Ruinsara valley. Another 2 hours of walk will take us to the camping ground for today near the waterfall.

As we begin our ascent to the Ruinsara Valley, you will notice a very obvious difference in the vegetation in this area, you will find the beautiful plants of Rhododendron, Pindrow fir & Himalayan Birch. Upon reaching the Ruinsara Lake, which is considered sacred by the locals, the view you will find is breathtaking. The lake is surrounded by vast meadows and Rhododendron bushes.

We will reach the Ruinsara Lake early & therefore you will have ample of time to explore the nearby places. Two different trails from the Ruinsara Lake lead to the Black Peak & Bali Pass. We will be back to the campsite near the lake before evening.

We will start walking early today and head back to Seema which is about 17 km away. The trail is mostly decent except for short steep ascents through the forest that we came from on the third day.

Today we say goodbye to Seema and leave for Taluka. At Taluka a vehicle waiting for us will take us back to Sankri where we will stay at The Crazy Mountaineer homestay for the night.

Today will be the last day of the Har Ki Dun Ruinsara trek. We will leave for Dehradun early in the morning and reach by late afternoon.

By Air :-

Jolly Grant Airport is the airport serving Dehradun, located about 25 km from the city. There is a daily flight from Delhi to Dehradun. Come one day early if planning to come by flight.


By Train:-

Nandadevi Express - Train no: 12205 (Departure 11:50pm; Arrival - 5:40am)

Dehradun Express - Train no: 12687 (Departure - 9:10pm; Arrival - 5:00am)


By Bus:-

There is regular bus service from Delhi to Dehradun, from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate. We would suggest you to take only government buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate. Private buses ply from outside ISBT and they are not trust worthiness.

Usually buses drop you at Dehradun ISBT. From there you have to come to Dehradun Railway Station

You will reach Sari village by 3:00 pm

  • Our Tata Sumo or similar vehicles will pick-up you from Dehradun Railway Station at 6:00am.
  • Pick-up is included in the cost of the trek
  • You will reach Sankri by 4:00 pm

Food from dehradun to Sankri is not included in the trek cost

  6. Any kind of emergency evacuation charges.

Note : Normally THE CRAZY MOUNTAINEERS expect to carry your personal luggage on your own, if you wish to offload your backpack, you can give it to Mule.

Charges of offloading backpack:-

INR 1200/- if you make an online payment, 10 days in advance

INR 1500/- if you inform us after reaching Sankri

The backpack cannot weigh more than 11 kgs. Backpack should have waterproof cover. Suitcases/strolleys/ bags will not be allowed.

In the event of cancellation of trek/adventure activity services due to any avoidable / unavoidable reasons we must be notified of the same in writing. Cancellation charges will be effective from the date we receive advice in writing, and cancellation charges would be as follows: -

Cancellations prior to 24 days from the start of the trek

Book any other trek till one year or get 95% refund (Note: If the trek charges are more, the balance needs to be paid by the trekker)

Cancellation between 24 days and 14 days to the start of the trek

Choose to go for the same trek, with any other batch, till year or get 70% refund

Cancellation between 14 days and 10 days to the start of the trek

Choose to go on the same trek, in the same season, with any other batch or get 50% refund.

Cancellation less than 10 days to the start of the trek

Transfer your trek (same trek, same batch) to your friend. No cash refund.
