Kanamo Peak Trek - Spiti Valley
The Kanamo Peak Trek offers a very unique Himalayan trekking experience. The view of Kinnaur Lahaul Spiti from a high altitude of 19,553 ft. is once in a lifetime experience. The trek passes through mountain deserts, sparse vegetation and only a touch of snow near the summit. The trail will take you through villages on the Kaza to Kibber stretch.
This trek is a moderate difficulty trek, and therefore the trail gets a little tricky from time to time. You will find yourself walking on boulders covered with snow. It is important to listen to your trek leader and follow his instructions.
Kanamo Peak Trek requires you to be in a physically and mentally fit condition. The high altitude climbing increases the chances of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) and therefore you are advised to follow a strict health regime at least 3 months prior to the trek.
On the first day we will drive 183 Km from Manali to Kaza. The drive on the Manali - Leh Highway is filled with scenic beauty especially near the Rohtang Pass area. You will be able to view towering mountains through the journey. As we cross Batal towards the end of the journey, you would have entered the Spiti Valley which becomes apparent with the beautiful sights of the villages surrounded by the green farming land. Overnight stay will be at a guest house.
Brief Overview of the Day
A one hour drive from Kaza will take us to Kibber at an altitude of 14,108 ft. Driving across the cold deserted roads, you will reach Kibber by lunchtime. You can spend the rest of the day exploring the areas in and around Kibber.
An important monastery called the Gompa Monastery is located here. The height of the monastery offers a great view of the surroundings with the Spiti River flowing below. You can spend some time with the monks exploring the monastery. Night stay will be at a guest house.
Brief Overview of the Day
Kibber is located at a high altitude of 14,010 ft which makes it a perfect place to get acclimated to the weather at high altitude. Today’s day will be spent getting used to the environment around us and conducting walks to get you used to the rocky terrain.
Brief Overview of the Day
On day four we will be trekking to Kanamo Base Camp, the hike is moderately difficult with a steep ascent as we start walking but the path levels out after 3 - 4 hours of walking then starts descending. You will cross a number of small villages on the way with paths filled with a variety of flowers that can sustain the conditions at this high altitude. The beautiful Brahma Kamal is one of those flowers.
The base camp is situated at an altitude of 15,748 feet and we will spend the night here in the camps.
Brief Overview of the Day
The most awaited day of the Kanamo Peak Trek has finally arrived and today we will be pushing for the Kanamo Peak which is at a towering height of 19,553 ft above the sea level.
We will start walking at the break of dawn when the mountains start emerging from the darkness of the night. Make sure to cover up properly because of the chilling winds that blow at this high altitude.
The hike to the top is filled with loose rocks on the path, watch your step carefully and take large steps. The trail is a mix of ascent with flat walks from time to time. As we get closer to the peak the snow gets deeper at various points.
From the Kanamo top you will be able to get a mesmerizing view of the Greater Himalayas. You will spot the entire Kinnaur-Lahaul-Spiti area along with clear views of Parang La & Pin Parvati passes. The climb down to the base camp is relatively easier and will take less time than climbing up
Brief Overview of the Day
After breakfast, we will start trekking down towards Kibber on a 6 hour journey. After we have lunch at Kibber we will be driving back to Kaza and the drive will take one hour to complete. Night stay will be at a guest house.
