Satopanth Lake trek - Glacial Lake of Divinity
Satopanth Lake Trek is a trek to a holy lake located at a height of 14,258 ft. above the sea level near the base of Chaukhamba Massif. The trek starts from a village famous as the last Indian village on the Indo-China border called Mana village. The village is located in the state of Uttarakhand near the holy pilgrim town of Badrinath.
The lake is a triangular shape with a perimeter of 1 Km filled with crystal clear water. According to legends Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh meditated at the three corners of the lake. The route to the lake offers a picturesque view of the nearby Chaukhamba, Nilkantha, Balakun and other prominent peaks. The best time to visit Satopanth Lake Trek is before and after monsoons in the months of May-June & September-October.
The first day of the trek begins with a long drive from Dehradun to Joshimath and therefore we will leave early in the morning. The drive is about 290 Km and would take about 9 to 10 hours. You are expected to arrive at Joshimath by evening and you have a choice to rest yourself or visit the local bazaar at Joshimath.
Brief Overview of the Day
Today we will be driving to one of the most famous pilgrim sites in India, also famous as one of the Char Dhams - Badrinath. The 46 Km drive will take 2 hours to complete. We will be spending the rest of the day at Badrinath so you can go visit the temple and the local market.
The starting point of the Satopanth Lake trek Mana Village is at a distance of mere 4 Km. from Badrinath. Night stay will be at a guest house.
Brief Overview of the Day
Today we will leave Badrinath and start walking towards Laxmiban. The trail starts with an easy ascend towards the Somtoli meadows along the Alaknanda river. As we walk forward, you will be able to spot 400 ft. tall Vasundhra Falls on the opposite bank of the river. On the way we will be crossing a landslide section up to the Somtoli meadows.
By the end of the trek, we will cross a boulder section into the cluster of Bhojpatra trees which will be our campsite for today. You will be able to catch the glimpse of Alakpuri, the starting point of Alaknanda river from the campsite.
Brief Overview of the Day
We will start walking on a challenging trail with a sharp ascent over the boulders towards our first destination for today at Sahastra Dhar. As we climb up the valley, you will be able to view the magnificent Neelkanth, Chaukhamba and Balakun mountains. As we cross Sahastra Dhar, the trail will get a bit flat with a number of small streams crossing each other. Watch your step as the trail might be slippery. At the end of the trek, the trail will once again enter a steep ascent to be followed by a level walk towards our campsite for today at Chakratirth.
Brief Overview of the Day
The most awaited day of the trek has arrived and today we will be pushing towards Satopanth Lake. The trail is an easy and short ascent but it is a bit tricky as we will have to cross various boulder sections on the way. Crossing the two streams coming down from the slope of Neelkanth we will finally reach the magnificent triangular lake - Satopanth. From the lake you will be able to view the tall Chaukhambha and Neelkanth mountains along with some small glacial lakes.
After spending some time at Satopanth Lake located at a high altitude of 14,258 ft. above sea level, we will be making our way back to Chakratirth which will be our campsite for today.
Brief Overview of the Day
On the sixth day, we will retrace our steps back to Somtoli meadow. Starting early in the morning we will trek 11 Km for about 7 hours and camp at the Somtoli meadow.
Brief Overview of the Day
We will finish the remaining part of the terk and return back to Mana Village from Somtoli and then we will drive back to Joshimath. Overnight stay will be at a guest house.
